It doesn’t matter if you drive a 2016 Porsche Cayenne or another one of our family-oriented luxury vehicles, there’s nothing quite like traveling with your children. While spending time in the car with your kids can be a great way to share some quality time with your family, traveling with young kids can be challenging. This is particularly true if your little ones are too young to use their words to identify something that’s bothering them.

Driving with your kids in the car can also be frustrating if they don’t behave themselves. Of course, it’s unrealistic to expect your children to be on their best behavior 100 percent of the time, especially if they’re going to be in the car for several hours. What is realistic, however, is being prepared to react to your kids’ behavior while remaining safe on the road.

Asa Jacksonville, FL Porsche dealer, we often hear parents talk about their experiences traveling with their kids. While many of their stories are funny and heartwarming, some of them inspired us to provide some advice about how you should react to two common behaviors: a toddler getting out of his or her car seat, and a baby crying and screaming uncontrollably.

If your toddler escapes from a car seat, it’s critical that you remain calm and focused on the road. To prevent your child from flying forward, you should also resist the temptation to brake suddenly. You need to pull off the road to a location that’s as far away from traffic as possible. You then need to put your little one back in the car seat and make sure the seat’s harness is sufficiently snug. As you’re putting your child in the seat, tell your toddler that getting out of his or her car seat while your vehicle is moving is never acceptable.

If your baby starts crying and screaming, your natural inclination may be to try to console your little one by reaching into the backseat. While that’s tempting, it’s also ill-advised. What you should do is pull off of the road into a well-lit parking lot or another safe area to see what has made your baby upset. Once you’ve settled your baby down, you may want to spend a few minutes sitting with him or her in the backseat.

While you can’t always control your children’s behavior, you do have total control over the vehicle you use to transport your family.
