Whether you drive one of our new Porsche cars or pre-owned models, it’s important to know the signs that indicate you need to get new tires. One way you can tell is by checking how worn the tread on your tires is.
An old school way to do this is to get a penny and place it with Lincoln’s head face-down into several of the tread grooves that run across your tires. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, your treads are too shallow and worn. If your remaining tread is sufficient to cover part of Lincoln’s head, your tread is in optimal condition.
Many states require that the tread on your tires be at least 2/32 of an inch. It’s important to monitor your tread wear for reasons other than remaining in compliance with the law, such as for your safety. Low tread can make it more difficult for your tires to remain in contact with the road in both normal and adverse conditions. Worn tread can also make other parts on your car wear out prematurely.
The age of your tires can be another sign that they need to be replaced. Many automakers recommend changing your tires every six to 10 years. Of course, your driving habits and the weather conditions in which you live depend on the frequency of changes. You can check your owner’s manual to identify the age at which you should get new tires.
